In September 2025, we had the pleasure to welcome prof. Thomas Albert Howard from Valparaiso University (USA, Indiana) at VU. Together with the Theological University Utrecht (TUU), we hosted an expert meeting and public lecture provided by prof. Howard on his forthcoming book Modern Christian Theology: An Intellectual History (Princeton University Press). Among others, our own Dr. Welmoet Boender and Jelmer Heeren were respondents at the expert meeting and shared their expertise, for Welmoet Boender on the position of Islamic theology at university and for Jelmer Heeren on neo-Calvinism and the history of VU. After the public lecture by prof. Howard later that afternoon, we had the pleasure to hear about the views of VU University historian Ab Flipse on prof. Howard’s insightful chapter on Neo-Calvinism, which touched on the history of our own university!
