Reintegrating Theology
Maarten Wisse, professor of systematic theology at the PThU and associate member of FOAT.
Recently, little attention is paid to the internal coherence of the theological discipline: how do the different subjects relate to each other? This is important, because in order to answer current theological questions, ideally all disciplines within theology should contribute to answering these questions in conjunction. The aim of this project is therefore to develop a coherent proposal of theology that is suitable to provide a credible and practicable interaction between the different theological subdisciplines in a late modern Western context. This vision should contribute to a better understanding of the coherence that is already present within theology and also strengthen the coherence insofar as it currently leaves much to be desired. The project aims to exemplify what it argues for, bringing together all three main methodological approaches common to contemporary theology, and reflecting on the ways in which those methodologies mutually enrich and need one another. The empirical research in the project takes an international approach and brings together data on views and practices of doing theology in a variety of contexts, both from the European continent, the UK and South Africa.
